Lutheran Carnival LXVI

Welcome to Lutheran Carnival LXVI and welcome to Theocon.

This carnival's little known Lutheran is Albert H. Schwermann, B.A., B.Ed., D.D. The reason I chose Rev. Schwermann is that he was the first President of Concordia College, Edmonton, now known as Concordia University College of Alberta. This is where I am currently pursuing my BA on route to seminary.

Rev. Schwermann was born in Jefferson City, MO, June 13, 1891, educated at Concordia College,Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Concordia Seminary St. Louis, Mo.,and The University of Alberta, Edmonton. Dr. Schwermann spent his entire ministry in Alberta. His first pastoral call was to the Mellowdale parish (near Barrhead) (1913-1916). Here he served an area covering 6,000 square miles.

In 1916 he married Hilda Hintz of Chicago, Illinois, who was extremely supportive of his ministry for 57 years.

From 1916 -1921 he served as pastor of Zion Lutheran Church, Wetaskiwin, and smaller congregations in the surrounding communities.

In 1921 he became the first president of the newly-founded Concordia College in Edmonton, serving in that capacity until 1953. He continued as Associate Professor for ten years.

Rev. Schwermann's story, written in his diary and in letters to his sister, of his first call to the early frontier of Northern Alberta are preserved by the Lutheran Historical Institute and available here. It is a very interesting story of the many challenges facing a new Pastor in the "Wild West". I highly recommend you read it.

Now on to the Carnival. This edition of the Carnival falling in the middle of the very busy Christmas/New Year season was looking like it was going to be very small, but ended up having a nice number of good, solid entries, enjoy!!

First we have Dan@ Necessary Roughness's post Born of the Virgin Mary in which DNR muses on the importance of the Incarnation in establishing
Christ's identity and thus Christianity. When God is doing the giving,
it may indeed be better to receive.

Nest, in a third party submission is What Happened? from Weedon's Blog where Pastor Weedon supposes why today's Lutherans don't accept the perpetual
virginity of the Virgin Mary as their Lutheran forefathers believed. Pastor Weedon has certainly stirred up interest with this post, at last count there was 25 comments, check it out, and add your comments to the list!

Another third party submission is this entry from the always interesting Balaam's Ass. In this post Timotheos defends scientists who are Christian (as opposed to Christian
Scientists) and believe in a six-day creation.

Next up is from
The Blog for Orthodox Lessons Learned and is titled Rome, Luther and Idioms. Here, Soldier Baker uses the idioms of "crossing rivers" to discuss those who cross over to Rome.

Now the first of my nominations, here at A Beggar At The Table Pastor K. says Farewell Advent with this poem.

Another nomination is from our Australian friend at Extra Nos. In his latest post,
The Third Use of Grace
L.P. dicusses the issue of grace, and where the focus is, especially in modern evangelicalism. Check it out, its guaranteed to get many interesting comments!

Next up is two submissions from Weekend Fisher @ Heart, Mind, Soul and Strength. The first, On Taking Human Form is on how God's opening salvo in our salvation works to overcome our distrust and renew faith; and how the incarnation of the Word of God gives us not only Christ but also gives us back our own humanity as a gift.
Second from Weekend Fisher is Debugging Christian History in which Weekend Fisher looks at how studying the early church can give an insight into how the apostolic churches lost their unity, which may give some insight on the road to re-unification.

In our next entry, Ms. Janice at The Blair Church Project gives us Have Yourself a Syncretistic Little Christmas where Christina and The Blair Church Project review CBS' recent broadcast of "In God's Name" and warn us that Buddhism isn't just for the fringe anymore!

And last, but not least check out Preachrblog for this post about the publication "Christian News" commenting on the Lutheran Blogs and Bloggers.

Thank you all for checking out this 66th edition of the Carnival, and don't forget to volunteer to host an upcoming edition!! Happy New Year and God Bless.
